A museum for space lovers
set for launch
Kerala is going to have a new landmark project with the opening of the Space Science Museum at the Science Park near Kakkanad, G Madhavan Nair, former chairman of ISRO, said on Thursday.

Addressing a press meet here to announce the launch of the museum, an innovative initiative of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre of the Indian Space Research Organization, Madhavan Nair said it would be a platform to exhibit the objects of space research and dream projects.

"The museum will also be a centre that will provide students a chance to do things practically," he said.

Former president A P J Abdul Kalam will launch the museum on Saturday and chief minister Oommen Chandy will preside over the function.

"Today's youths have few opportunities to explore science subjects, and the science park will create activities that will interest students," said Madhavan Nair. VSSC is setting up a special structure here and research organizations in defence and atomic energy. Cochin University of Science and Technology would be able to conduct experiments and join in as partners too, he said.

The three-acre museum would be expanded later, said Indira Rajan of Global Education Foundation.

It had provided space for the museum at Navodaya Junction near Kakkanad. The museum would showcase various models of PSLV, GSLV, INSAT 2A and Chandrayan-I, among others. However, within six months, a space wing and defence research centre would start functioning there, she said.
